![]() ![]() ![]() Here we're talking about broad genres of music that were primarily created by and for the same demographic so it's not ridiculous to imagine the latter was influenced by the former (there's even direct overlap in some cases where performers of R&B and soul in the 60s went on to perform hip hop and funk). This isn't at all the same as the notion that soul and R&B music from the 60s inspired the latter developments of hip hop and funk. In other words, it's absurd to think heavy metal wouldn't have come about if it weren't for "Ticket To Ride". This simply isn't the case with the claim that "Ticket To Ride" is a heavy metal song because it's an objectively false claim, and it's so far removed from the heavy metal sound that it's highly unlikely that it had any influence on the later development of heavy metal. It's one thing to argue over a question like "What is the best Beatles album?" where it's clearly a matter of opinion. Nevertheless, the idea that "Ticket To Ride" was the first heavy metal song or influenced its development however is a ridiculous and obviously false claim. This isn't personal for me you might be a great person for all I know and have no reason to think otherwise. I found this claim so absurd that I dug up the transcript of the interview in which he is alleged to have said it and the claim is nowhere to be found in it It's not clear that he actually even said "Ticket To Ride" was the first heavy metal song anyway. It's pretty straightforward if Lennon actually did say that "Ticket To Ride" was the first heavy metal song he clearly had no clue what heavy metal is and was probably naively conflating it with already dated 60s era notions of "heavy music" which actually had nothing to do with what would become heavy metak (he is alleged to have said this in one of his last interviews). You could make a far more plausible case that The Rolling Stones' "Get Off Of My Cloud" was the first metal song, though such an argument would also be ridiculous. Rather than acknowledge the obvious absurdity of the claim, they leap immediately to trying to rationalize it. This is an absurd idea that gets taken seriously by some people simply because John Lennon said it. ![]()
